Serbian Irregular Nouns

(PDF version)

There is a small class of irregular nouns that don’t have predictable plural forms. In addition, some of these nouns have a different gender in singular and plural! Here is a partial list.

Table 1: Irregular nouns with different gender in singular and plural
Singular  - gender of noun Plural – gender of noun
dete   ‘child’ - neuter deca   ‘children’ - feminine
brat   ‘brother’ – masculine braća   ‘brothers’ - feminine
oko   ‘eye’ – neuter oči   ‘eyes’ – feminine
veče   ‘evening’ – neuter večeri*   ‘evenings’ - feminine
unuče   ‘grandchild’ - neuter unučad   ‘grandchildren’ - neuter

Notes:

  • Amazing to think that the word meaning brothers is feminine. So you have to just learn it.

  • *The noun večeevening’ in plural has an extra ‘r večeri. In some dialects of Serbian (and also Croatian), even the singular has an ‘r’: večerevening’, in which case, it is a feminine noun in both singular and plural. But this is aside note. So, just memorize what is shown in Table 1.
